The funeral prayer (Salat al-Janazah) is a collective obligation (Fard Kifayah) upon the Muslim community. When a believer departs this worldly life, fellow Muslims are commanded to gather, wash, shroud, pray over, and bury the deceased with supreme honor and dignity. In the Hanafi school of Islamic jurisprudence, Salat al-Janazah possesses a unique liturgical structure: it is a prayer consisting entirely of four Takbeerat uttered while standing, devoid of bowing (Ruku’), prostration (Sujud), or Adhan.
Legal Status and Preconditions
If a group of Muslims performs the funeral prayer, the divine obligation is lifted from the entire community; however, if all Muslims in the locality abandon it, every knowledgeable individual bears collective guilt. For the prayer to be valid, specific conditions must be fulfilled:
- Purity of the Body and Bier: The deceased Muslim must have received a complete ritual bath (Ghusl) and be wrapped in pure shrouds (Kafan). Praying over an unwashed body when washing was possible invalidates the prayer.
- Placement of the Deceased: The body must be placed on the ground in front of the Imam, with the chest facing the Qiblah. Praying over a body placed behind the congregation or loaded onto a moving vehicle is invalid.
- Absence of Absentee Funeral Prayers (Salat al-Gha’ib): A distinctive and firm position of the Hanafi madhhab is that Salat al-Janazah al-Gha’ib (praying in absentia over a deceased person located in another city or country) is impermissible and invalid. The physical presence of the deceased’s body before the Imam is a non-negotiable legal condition. The prophetic prayer over the Negus of Abyssinia was an exclusive divine miracle where the earth was folded and the bier was made visible directly to the Prophet (PBUH).
- State of Purity for Worshipers: All standard prerequisites of prayer (Wudu, facing Qiblah, covering Awrah) apply to the attendees.
The Two Obligatory Pillars (Arkan) of Janazah
According to Imam Abu Hanifah and classical Hanafi jurists, the funeral prayer has only two foundational pillars (Fara’id):
- Pronouncing the Four Takbeerat: Each Takbeer stands legally in place of an entire Rak’ah. Omitting even one Takbeer voids the prayer completely.
- Standing Upright (Qiyam): The prayer must be offered standing unless one has a genuine medical incapacity.
The Emphasized Sunnahs
While the two pillars secure validity, the complete Sunnah requires three vital components recited silently by the Imam and followers:
- Praising Allah (Thana) immediately following the first Takbeer.
- Invoking blessings upon the Prophet (Salawat / Durood Ibrahim) after the second Takbeer.
- Supplicating sincerely for the deceased (Dua) after the third Takbeer.
Step-by-Step Hanafi Method of Performing Salat al-Janazah
- Formulate Intention: Intend: “I intend to pray Salat al-Janazah for the sake of Allah, as a supplication for this deceased, following this Imam.”
- The First Takbeer: The Imam says “Allahu Akbar” audibly. Raise both hands to the earlobes (the only time hands are raised in Janazah) and fold them beneath the navel. Silently recite the Thana with the unique funeral addition:
“Subhanakallahumma wa bihamdika, wa tabarakasmuka, wa ta’ala jadduka, wa jalla thana’uk, wa la ilaha ghayruk.”
- The Second Takbeer: The Imam says “Allahu Akbar”. Do not raise your hands. Remain folded and recite Durood Ibrahim silently:
“Allahumma salli ‘ala Muhammadin wa ‘ala aali Muhammad, kama sallayta ‘ala Ibrahima wa ‘ala aali Ibrahima, innaka Hamidum Majid…”
- The Third Takbeer: The Imam says “Allahu Akbar”. Without raising hands, recite the authentic prophetic supplication for an adult:
“Allahummaghfir li-hayyina wa mayyitina, wa shahidina wa gha’ibina, wa saghirina wa kabirina, wa dhakarina wa unthana. Allahumma man ahyaytahu minna fa-ahyihi ‘alal-Islam, wa man tawaffaytahu minna fa-tawaffahu ‘alal-iman.”
(For a deceased boy child): Recite: “Allahummaj’alhu lana faratan, waj’alhu lana ajran wa dhukhran, waj’alhu lana shafi’an wa mushaffa’a.”
(For a deceased girl child): Substitute feminine pronouns: “Allahummaj’alha lana…” - The Fourth Takbeer and Conclusion: The Imam says the fourth “Allahu Akbar”. Without raising hands, pause briefly, then conclude the prayer by turning the head to the right and left, saying: “Assalamu ‘alaykum wa rahmatullah” to both sides. Drop the hands to the sides after the Salam.
Conclusion
Salat al-Janazah is the ultimate communal farewell and intercession for a departed soul. Practicing its authentic Hanafi rulings ensures that we fulfill our solemn duty to our deceased brothers and sisters with reverence, legal perfection, and heartfelt devotion.
