Human beings are constantly confronted with pivotal life choices—marriage, business investments, career transitions, and relocation. In His boundless mercy, Allah (SWT) gifted the Muslim Ummah with a transcendent mechanism for seeking divine counsel: Salat al-Istikhara. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) prioritized teaching Istikhara to his companions with the same rigor and dedication that he used to teach chapters of the Holy Quran. However, pervasive cultural myths have clouded its true legal and spiritual nature. Below is the authentic method of Istikhara in Hanafi jurisprudence.
What is the True Purpose of Istikhara?
Istikhara literally translates to “seeking the best outcome” (Khayr) from Allah. It is fundamentally an act of total surrender (Tafwid), acknowledging human limitation and relying upon divine omniscience. Istikhara is prescribed exclusively for matters that are inherently permissible (Mubah) where multiple valid options exist. It cannot be performed for obligatory duties (Fard), prohibited matters (Haram), or universally blameworthy actions.
Dispelling the Myth of Dreams: Contrary to popular superstition, Istikhara does not require the worshiper to experience a dream, witness specific colors (such as green or white), or hear mysterious voices. The classical Hanafi position, articulated by scholars like Allamah Ibn Abidin, is that Istikhara works by placing tranquility, clarity, and ease (Inshirah as-Sadr) into the person’s heart, steering events naturally toward what is beneficial while creating subtle barriers against what is harmful.
The Sunnah Method of Performing Istikhara
Salat al-Istikhara consists of two voluntary (Nafl) Rak’ahs followed by the specific prophetic supplication:
- Perform Wudu: Ensure complete ritual purity according to the Sunnah.
- Intention: Formulate the intention in the heart to pray two Rak’ahs of voluntary prayer for Istikhara.
- Recitation in Prayer:
- In the first Rak’ah, recite Surah al-Fatihah followed by Surah al-Kafirun.
- In the second Rak’ah, recite Surah al-Fatihah followed by Surah al-Ikhlas.
(While any Surah is valid, these two Surahs highlight complete devotion and pure monotheism).
- Completion of Prayer: Complete the two Rak’ahs with the standard sitting, Tashahhud, Salawat, and final Salam.
- Offering the Prophetic Dua: Immediately upon concluding the prayer with Salam, raise your hands, praise Allah, invoke blessings upon the Prophet (PBUH), and recite the definitive prophetic supplication.
The Authentic Wording of Dua al-Istikhara
“Allahumma inni astakhiruka bi-‘ilmika, wa astaadiruka bi-qudratika, wa as’aluka min fadlikal-‘adheem. Fa-innaka taqdiru wa la aqdir, wa ta’lamu wa la a’lam, wa Anta ‘Allamul-ghuyub. Allahumma in kunta ta’lamu anna hadhal-amra [mention the specific matter here] khayrun li fi deeni wa ma’ashi wa ‘aqibati amri (or ‘ajili amri wa aajilih), faqdurhu li wa yassirhu li, thumma barik li feeh. Wa in kunta ta’lamu anna hadhal-amra sharrun li fi deeni wa ma’ashi wa ‘aqibati amri (or ‘ajili amri wa aajilih), fasrifhu ‘anni wasrifni ‘anhu, waqdur liyal-khayra haythu kana thumma ardini bih.”
Translation: “O Allah, I seek Your counsel through Your knowledge, and I seek ability through Your power, and I ask You of Your immense bounty. For You possess power and I do not, and You know and I do not, and You are the Knower of the unseen. O Allah, if You know that this matter [name your decision] is good for me in my religion, my livelihood, and the outcome of my affairs, then decree it for me, facilitate it for me, and then bless me in it. And if You know that this matter is harmful to me in my religion, my livelihood, and the outcome of my affairs, then turn it away from me and turn me away from it, and decree for me good wherever it may be, and make me content with it.”
Practical Rules and Next Steps
- Consultation Precedes or Accompanies Istikhara: In Islamic ethics, Istikhara (consulting the Creator) must be paired with Istisharah (consulting knowledgeable, trustworthy humans). One should gather facts, consult experts, and then perform Istikhara.
- Repeating Up to Seven Times: If uncertainty persists after the first day, it is Sunnah to repeat the two Rak’ahs and supplication over consecutive days, up to seven times.
- Proceed with Conviction: After completing Istikhara, take active, permissible steps toward your intended decision. If the matter is good, Allah will remove obstacles; if it is bad, circumstances will close the door naturally.
Conclusion
Salat al-Istikhara liberates the believer from debilitating regret and anxiety. Entrusting our future to the All-Wise Creator guarantees that whatever outcome unfolds carries eternal wisdom, protection, and goodness.
